People always tell me that I am “sooo human”.
“Hans, you should really consider working with disabled people; you are so humane.” “Thanks for helping me, Johannes, you are such an humane person.”
What the fuck does that even mean? I know that, scientifically I belong to the animal called human, but why I am “such a human”? I do everything a human being does, right? Eat, sleep, being driven by habits, trying to live a fulfilled life,…
My guess is that maybe people associate being human with people that are empathetic, honest and kind.
Well I dont.
People do fucked up shit. Just open google and look for some of the various gore websites out there. People can be incredibly cruel to one another.
Perhaps I am too cynical. Perhaps I shouldnt push my moral compass onto other people.
Maybe people see the potential for goodness and compassion as inherent in being human. They want to belive that, despite the atrocitiesm there is an inate capacity for kindness and empathy within us.
Do I embody that?
I always try my best to be kind, even if my kindess is used against me. A relentness persuit of the good. Yes, I have my flaws, but I try my best.
Perhaps, being “sooo human” is not about being perfect, but recognizing our flaws and still choosing to act with kindness. Accepting the dual nature of humanity, yet still helping eachother. Yin Yang.
Who is the most humane human?
